Mid Air: a graphic novella

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Photoshop

The objective of this personal project was to create a graphic novel that lets the art tell the story. We were supposed to refer to artists with narrative art styles for the frames in the short graphic novella. The story is to be inspired by real-life events to help in creating impactful visuals.

Narrative

We were lost. Four students and a teacher were stuck on the side of a mountain during spring. The thin muddy and devious path was the only way to descend safely. We trod cautiously, knowing that one wrong step could cost us our lives. But the melting snow made it very difficult to move forward and I slipped. I clutched the thin trunk of the tree beside me very hard. I suddenly found myself rotating around the tree with one leg skidding on a thin strip of land and the other one dangling in the air. When I come to a halt, I regained my balance and continued onward as if nothing happened.

Outcome

For the sake of the story, I tweaked the ending of my experience and created a graphic novella that consists of eight A5 sheets. I have taken inspiration from Girodet, abstract artists like Pollock and Barnet Newman and even Soviet, Japanese and Indian traditional art styles. I wanted to produce a visual narrative that is cohesive despite being incorporated with many contrasting styles.
